Base Backpackers, Australia and New Zealand (Australia)

With eight locations, Base is something of a revolution in the backpacker market, providing resort-style accommodation for budget travellers, with bars a feature at most. Melbourne’s St Kilda hostel is a notably slick state-of-the-art affair.

Celica Youth Hostel (Slovenia)

Located in Ljubljana, this former military prison turned hostel has had a radical make-over courtesy of more than 80 Slovenian artists who refurbished each cell individually, while retaining their jail-chic metal-bar doors for a touch of grit.

Stranger (Poland)

The heart of The Stranger is the den of entertainment called the ‘Ju Ju Lounge’, which features Internet access, plus DVDs and X-Box projected onto a 3m (10ft) screen. This is a real party place, where you can socialise with strangers over a beer.

Hostal Forestal (Chile & Easter Island)

Laid-back and a mere swagger away from a leafy park, neoclassical architecture and street cafés, Hostal Forestal has been described as akin to crashing at your brother’s place thanks to the casual staff and the endearingly scruffy communal areas.

Clay Hostel (Miami)

This pink hotel in Miami has a colourful history, having been both a gambling den for Al Capone and a rumba dancing venue. The 100-year-old building was refurbished in the ’80s and has a dated charm, but it did feature in Miami Vice.
